If it were not for the unmistakable sound of Enrico Pieranunzi's piano playing it would be hard to determine, when first hearing it, that "Permutation" is the new album by the Roman pianist. As reveals the title of this CAM Jazz release, it's an album of great changes and transformations, because Enrico Pieranunzi - unlike many musicians in the world - has a unique gift: his ability to listen to his partners and truly converse with them. Some would call this pure interplay. His partners are none other than the monumental Scott Colley on bass and the unparalleled Antonio Sanchez on drums... and it's here their game begins. "Scott and Antonio are not merely a bass player and drummer", says Pieranunzi, "they are two extremely talented artistic personalities, excellent musicians and highly original jazz performers and composers. I have to say that playing with them has been a real thrill. This trio has truly been a sound laboratory where interaction is bound to lead down unexpected paths."

Nine songs written by the hand of Enrico Pieranunzi and recorded in the famous Bauer Studios of Germany which, on the one hand, reveal a different facet of the pianist but, on the other hand, enhance his talent as a composer and improviser: the qualities that have made Pieranunzi one of the most respected personalities in the world of jazz today. Permutation: una “mutazione” che colpisce dai primi secondi, per il grande pianista romano. Non che sia mai mancata, alla diteggiatura sontuosa del nostro, una robusta caratura ritmica. Ma qui, con Scott Colley al contrabbasso e Antonio Sanchez alla batteria, non troverete se non in qualche episodio il tratto più lirico ed intimista di Enrico Pieranunzi: c’è invece un tocco prepotentemente elastico e ritmico, evidentemente galvanizzato dalla situazione di primus inter pares con due mostri sacri. Tutte composizioni di Pieranunzi, splendide una per l’altra e destinate a durare.

Il nuovo trio di Pieranunzi si rivela funzionale alla linea poetica scelta dal pianista romano, che trova nella poliritmia di ascendenza latin di Sanchez e nella profonda sapienza armonica di Colley due cardini sui quali realizzare l’intero repertorio, basato su pagine originali che favoriscono la dialettica interna, l’interplay tra i musicisti.
Nella musica del gruppo avvertiamo gli echi delle Improlines che hanno caratterizzato diverse opere del leader, con la musica orientata verso una marcata componente ritmica e una freschezza espressiva che sostituisce la dimensione romantica del trio storico di Pieranunzi con Johnson e Baron, e anche le linee classiche delle sue recenti esplorazioni scarlattianae e bachiane, spostando il baricentro verso un coinvolgente vitalismo. Tra gli ultimi album del pianista, questo è forse quello più legato alla linea afroamericana del jazz.

E dopo aver gloriosamente occupato la copertina del 69esimo numero di Jazzit arriva anche su OUTsiders l’ultimo capolavoro del grande Enrico Pieranunzi: Permutation. Nove composizioni originali di musica intensa e penetrante, ricca di sfumature, di idee, di intenzioni diverse: in questo disco un trio di all-stars – ad accompagnare il raffinato lirismo di Pieranunzi troviamo gli americani Scott Colley al basso e Antonio Sanchez alla batteria – ci ricorda cosa significa suonare piano e forte, ci racconta quanto possa essere profonda l’intesa tra musicisti che prima di ogni altra cosa si sanno ascoltare a vicenda, ci spiega come abbandonare la nostra coscienza al demiurgico e dinamico potere della fantasia. Non è il Pieranunzi cui siamo abituati l’autore e l’interprete di questo meraviglioso album: c’è più energia, più libertà, forse, rispetto ad alcuni lavori precedenti eppure non c’è fatica o finzione. Il suo stile tuttavia lo ritroviamo immediatamente, dal gusto imperante per la melodia che ne ha sempre fatto un jazzista “europeo” all’incredibile ricercatezza armonica, compatta al punto che basso e batteria perdono il ruolo di sezione ritmica e diventano semplicemente altre due voci che dialogano e inseguono mano destra e sinistra: ma più di ogni cosa in questo disco si nota l’ordine. Ad aprire abbiamo i pezzi più movimentati e frenetici – Strangest Consequences e Critical Path –, quindi arriva il profetico Permutation che cambia letteralmente le carte in tavola per lasciare spazio alla delicatezza diDistance From Departure, alla bellezza quasi idealizzata di Horizontes Finales e Every Smiles Of Yours -capolavori assoluti di questo disco anche se potrebbero sembrare i pezzi meno propriamente jazz- fino alle riflessioni sussurrate di Within The House Of Night che crescono, maturano ed esplodono in The Point At Issue e si chiudono, come è giusto che sia, con la freschezza di A Different Breath. E ogni brano è strutturato secondo una logica chiara e facilmente intellegibile: un tema principale, spesso divisibile in due, viene prima esposto, poi sviluppato sino a renderlo altro al punto che quando viene ripreso il tema di apertura, nel finale, esso risulta non trasfigurato ma cresciuto, come se la musica stessa fosse diventata più consapevole di se stessa e delle proprie infinite potenzialità, quasi a richiamare quella forma sonata che fece innamorare tanti tra quei compositori “classici”che Pieranunzi ha già più di una volta omaggiato. E’ straordinaria poi la qualità del suono, frutto dell’esperienza dei leggendari Bauer Studios e della grande professionalità di Johannes Wohlleben (recording & mixing engineer): non c’è niente da fare, quando qualcosa passa attraverso un banco Neve non può che venire esaltata in ogni sua minima caratteristica, anche se la peculiarità più sorprendente di questo album è forse l’immagine stereofonica, ampia e precisa al punto che è quasi possibile seguire “con gli occhi” i movimenti delle dita di Pieranunzi sui tasti del pianoforte. Di questo disco è davvero difficile non dirne ogni bene, perché certo, non sarà esattamente “pieno di ritmo” in senso stretto, ma è un lavoro così completo, coerente, e ogni strumento partecipa e lascia partecipare gli altri secondo una logica democratica troppo poco comune per i grandi nomi del jazz. L’unica stranezza che non si può non notare è che le registrazioni risalgono al Novembre del 2009 e il disco è stato rilasciato solo nel 2012: non riesco a immaginare quale sia la motivazione dietro a una simile scelta commerciale, ma a quanto pare alla Cam Jazz sanno quello che fanno e noi non vediamo l’ora di scoprire cos’altro ci stanno tenendo nascosto nel loro cilindro.

Das Enrico Pieranunzi New American Trio in gleicher Besetzung kürzlich in der ausverkauften Zürcher Widder Bar: ein grosses Konzert, wie ich es schon lange nicht mehr erlebte. Die drei spielten in faszinierender Weise zusammen, voller Ideenreichtum, Spannung und kommunikativer Dichte. Ein musikalisch ganz besonderes Erlebnis, vor allem auch, wie sie mit Motiven und melodischen Partikeln spielten, sich aber auch ideenreich und inspirierend gegeneinander musikalisch in Szene setzten. Da wechselten sich diffizile, lineare Einzelstimmen oder Geflechte, oft voller Kantabilität, in grossen Bögen mit emotionalem Powerplay ab, mündete fantasievolles Interplay in spontane, aufregende Einzel-Actions, sorgsam im Hintergrund von den Partnern assistiert. Kaum eine Spur übrigens vom als elegisch und versponnen bekannten Pianisten. Grandios etwa der in energetische Passagen wechselnde Standard “My Funny Valentine”. Das alles ist auch auf der vorliegenden CD zu finden, allerdings aufbauend ausschliesslich auf Eigenkompositionen Pieranunzis, was die Sache noch ereignisreicher macht – eine Musik, die auch auf dieser CD zum Ereignis wird.

Enrico Pieranunzi Trio Permutation

Il continuo alternarsi fra le performances in piano solo e quelle in trio sono, per il pianista e compositore Enrico Pieranunzi, cosa ormai assodata e sempre più frequente, sia in campo discografico che in quello concertistico. La disarmante naturalezza, con la quale passa dal repertorio “barocco” (ravvivato dalle vivide luminescenze della libera improvvisazione) al proporsi in trio dalla connotazione a stelle e strisce, non rappresenta per Pieranunzi alcun ostacolo estetico-formale. A tal proposito, questa recentissima pubblicazione ad opera della CAM JAZZ è il frutto di una nuova esperienza del maestro romano con il mondo musicale americano, in un serrato dialogo a tre con i due fra i più richiesti solisti dell’attuale scena mondiale, quali il granitico contrabbassista Scott Colley e il pirotecnico batterista Antonio Sanchez. L’album prende il nome dalla turbinante terza traccia “Permutation, a dimostrazione della bravura di Enrico Pieranunzi nel fare musica in un processo di continua mutazione. Il disco rivela una muscolarità ritmico-dinamica che, nelle pregresse collaborazioni con la poeticità di Charlie Haden e Billy Higgins o l’eleganza di Marc Johnson e Joey Baron, Pieranunzi non aveva mai espresso, per questo, ecco la trasformazione a cui si faceva pocanzi riferimento. Il disco si apre con “Strangest consequences” (brano dall’andamento moderatamente sostenuto), in cui i tre virtuosi svelano il loro intenso interplay in una coesa concretezza stilistica. Nello scorrere delle successive otto composizioni a firma del bandleader, si fanno largo varie sfumature espressive, nelle quali si denota un condiviso amore per la libera improvvisazione e una straordinaria abilità nel sapersi ascoltare e assecondare. Di notevole bellezza risultano sia “Distance from departure” per la connotazione ballad, “Every smile of yours” per la composta briosità ritmica e “Within the House of Night” per la struggente poeticità melodica. Un progetto, come sottolineato dallo stesso Pieranunzi, che vive il presente guardando il futuro, grazie alla sincera empatia e alla vibrante sinergia sprigionata dal suo dinamico e colto panismo, dal solido e raffinato groove di Scott Colley e dal vorticoso e affidabile drummin’ di Antonio Sanchez.
La ripresa audio di questo lavoro, avvenuta presso i Bauer studios di Ludwigsburg, si fa apprezzare per la trasparenza timbrica e per la riproduzione della scena. La buona leggibilità del micro e macro dettaglio sonico e una corretta riproduzione dei volumi d’aria intorno ai singoli strumenti aggiungono fascino a un lavoro già di per sé di ottima fattura.

He possesses rhythmic drive and technique to spare and they’re tied to an intensely personal lyricism. Pieranunzi has that rarest quality in a pianist: his own sound. His articulation is second to none and that clarion brilliance surmounts his subtle mastery of shifting chord voicings.
While he has maintained working trios in Europe, he has also worked regularly with some of the very best American rhythm players, among them Charlie Haden and Paul Motian and has recorded a series of CDs with Marc Johnson and Joey Baron.Permutation unveils a new configuration with bassist Scott Colley and drummer Antonio Sanchez. The trio has a quality all its own, an aggressive rhythmic energy that connects effectively with Pieranunzi’s compositions. He often employs repeating phrases in his melodies – almost ostinatos – and Colley and Sanchez join the pianist in creating tense, swirling, three-way debates of great complexity, whether emphasizing a knotty tension or welling passion. The rhythmic dynamism combines brilliantly with the almost ceremonial formalism of some of Pieranunzi’s melodies, like “Horizontes Finales”. Un album di grandi trasformazioni, perché Enrico Pieranunzi - come pochi musicisti al mondo - ha una dote unica: quella di saper ascoltare i propri partner e con essi dialogare veramente. Questi partner non sono nientemeno che Scott Colley al contrabbasso e Antonio Sanchez alla batteria. Due musicisti notevoli che non sono stati arruolati per la “banale” funzione di Sidemen, ma sono parte integrante delle composizioni. Sono loro a dare al maestro le fondamenta solide per un interplay morbido, giocoso, per niente forzato. Nove brani nati tutti dalla penna di Pieranunzi registrati nei celebri Bauer Studios per la Camjazz, e che svelano le doti compositive e improvvisatrici che hanno reso Pieranunzi una delle personalità in ambito jazzistico più stimate al mondo. A Trio’s Fourth Member Is Intuition

Erudition and clarity come naturally to the jazz pianist enrico Pieranunzi, who has led a charmed career in his native Italy stretching back some 40 years. A fluid technician with a foothold in the classical tradition, he has always done well to indulge his exploratory urges, pushing beyond the respectable sprawl of his comfort zone. Otherwise he runs the risk of sounding dry and a little calculating, too much like a figure of the conservatory.
His best strategy tends to involve top-flight American rhythm teams, with partners of instigative temperament. One of his acclaimed former trios featured the bassist Marc Johnson and the drummer Joey Baron; another featured Charlie Haden and Paul Motian. His current trio skews a bit younger, with Scott Colley on bass and Antonio Sanchez on drums, and the results so far have been rewarding: “Permutations,” Mr. Pieranunzi’s new album on Cam Jazz, is an effervescent win, and so was his first set at the Village Vanguard on Tuesday night.
Its opener was “Critical Path,” a tune with a cascading melodic motif, in buoyant, polyrhythmic waltz time. Right away there was chromatic tension and plunging locomotion, with all three musicians feeding the boiler. Next up was the album’s title track, which treads some of the same harmonic turf but with a more changeable approach to tempo, ratcheting up at a moment’s notice. The effect strongly suggested Herbie Hancock, but without tipping over into imitation. Mr. Sanchez and Mr. Colley are two of the brighter lights in modern jazz, and their bond runs deep. They often play in each other’s bands, and in groups led by the vibraphonist Gary Burton, among others. Their fantastic interactivity behind Mr. Pieranunzi was governed by an intuitive tact: Nobody crowded the conversation, even when all parties were speaking at once. This was equally true on ballad fare like “Distance From Departure,” which yielded exquisite work from Mr. Colley. His solo began in halting, Hadenesque sobriety and quickened into arabesques.
Along with his usual achievements of touch and flow Mr. Pieranunzi showed an impressive ease in the driver’s seat, managing to lead his band mates without inhibiting their freedom. Maybe another way to put it is that he co-opted their rapport, but it didn’t feel that way, even when he reached past “Permutations” to his older trio repertory, segueing from a velvety solo treatment of Cole Porter’s “Ev’rything I Love” into a swirling original, “Border Line.”
He brought the band back on point with “Every Smile of Yours,” which, with its three-against-four pulse and its hopeful-sounding modal flourishes, was evocative of early Chick Corea. But the trio made it register as a discovery, well before Mr. Sanchez’s tour de force of a drum solo.

Il tempo ha dimostrato quanto le numerose e ripetute lodi ricevute dal trio americano del pianista Enrico Pieranunzi (quello con Marc Johnson e Joey Baron) fossero meritate. Alla luce dei dischi registrati e degli innumerevoli splendidi concerti, questa formazione è stata tra le primissime in attività negli ultimi tre lustri. Ma Pieranunzi non ha, per nostra fortuna, nessuna intenzione di fermarsi o di sedersi sugli allori, e dopo il disco latino in quintetto e quello in solitudine dedicato ai maestri classici di fine Seicento, ha adesso inaugurato il suo nuovo scintillante trio americano. Sarebbe davvero inutile fare paragoni tra vecchi e nuovi protagonisti, ma è evidente che Antonio Sanchez e Scott Colley hanno caratteristiche artistiche molto diverse dai predecessori Johnson e Baron. Quelli, infatti, erano stilisti perfetti e la loro raffinatezza era complemento ideale per le composizioni di Pieranunzi, spesso liriche, quasi oniriche, sulle orme del grande Bill Evans; adesso il pianista sembra voler dare alla sua scrittura un taglio più dinamico, più ritmico, oserei dire più sanguigno, e sotto questo profilo il supporto del bassista Scott Colley e soprattutto il frastagliatissimo fraseggio ritmico del batterista Antonio Sanchez (messicano di nascita, e si sente) sono quanto di meglio si potesse desiderare. Il pianoforte di Pieranunzi è oggi altrettanto evocativo ma più vivace e forte con l’uso degli ostinato e delle frasi ritmiche accentuate con la mano sinistra.
A partire dal primo eccitante brano in scaletta, lo spettacolare “Strangest Consequences”, i tre si gettano “anima e corpo” in una serie di esecuzioni scintillanti che alternano momenti dinamicamente molto vivi, di certo non consueti sinora nel lessico espressivo del pianista, ad altri in cui i tre cercano nell’interiorità e nell’approfondimento armonico altri modi per emozionare. Sono questi gli episodi che legano questo trio al suo predecessore. Del resto la coerenza e l’onestà espressiva sono sempre stati un tratto distintivo del musicista romano. Lo stesso Pieranunzi, nelle note di copertina, spiega l’esigenza di fantasia di moto e di continua trasformazione della sua musica, del suo jazz. Del resto qualunque artista capace di innovare non può che vedere il suo percorso come un continuo e costante “work in progress”. Non possiamo che plaudire a questa nuova interessantissima fase del tragitto artistico di Pieranunzi che, lo confessiamo, ci ha stupiti e convinti immediatamente. Da tempo il musicista è da ritenersi con pieno merito nel gotha dei migliori pianisti jazz in attività. Il suo essere italiano ci inorgoglisca e non alimenti stupidi scetticismi.
Da sempre alla Cam Jazz si ritiene la fase della corretta registrazione quale complemento necessario alla realizzazione artistica. “Permutation” brilla per naturalezza, corretta dinamica e definizione.

Nuovo-vecchio trio per Pieranunzi – 5 stars

Con Scott Colley (contrabbasso) e Antonio Sanchez (batteria) un dialogo musicale fatto di mestiere e passione.
Pieranunzi riscopre, e colora di nuovi accenti le sue radici jazz, più profonde. In un’ora passa in rassegna tutta la tavolozza, dal moderno al classico. Senza eccessi o narcisismi, guidato solo dalla forza delle emozioni, e dal continuo scambio con i musicisti del nuovo trio. Continua mutazione già evocata dal titolo, Permutation. E’ rilettura della propria musica, che si reinventa nel confronto con gli altri. E Pieranunzi, si conferma invenzione e creatività sulla punta delle dita, un tocco che rende unico il suono del suo pianoforte.
Mestiere senz’altro, ma anche anima, passione, e soprattutto la rara capacità di ascoltare i propri partner, per poi lasciarli liberi da condizionamenti e dialogare con loro in totale parità. La collaborazione con Scott Colley (contrabbasso) e Antonio Sanchez (batteria) diventa un’altra tappa di questo cambiamento.
“Il trio è infatti un laboratorio sonoro in cui interagendo con altri puoi trovare qualcosa che in anticipo non ti aspettavi – afferma Pieranunzi, presentando il cd – E’ appunto un luogo musicale di cambiamento e di trasformazione in cui un brano che in un certo modo prende strade impreviste grazie alla fantasia e alla personalità dei singoli componenti. Questo è esattamente ciò che è accaduto con questo nuovo trio. Con loro avevo già suonato in passato, quindi l’idea di riunirci e dar vita a questo nuovo trio è venuta fuori naturale. Scott e Antonio non sono semplicemente un bassista e un batterista: sono due individualità artistiche di grande spessore, eccellenti strumentisti e insieme originali interpreti e compositori jazz”.
Un incontro riuscito che si spinge ben oltre il semplice piacere di suonare insieme. Scott Colley una vera forza della natura, sempre pronto con Antonio Sanchez – fra i migliori batteristi – a dare nuova e più profonda intensità alla sensibilità compositiva di Pieranunzi.

C'est avec son nouveau trio et à l'occasion de la sortie du CD Permutation que le pianiste et compositeur italien Enrico Pieranunzi revient se produire à Paris, vendredi 2 mars, dans le cadre du "Sunset hors les murs". Maintenir un trio transatlantique n'est pas la chose la plus aisée, surtout quand vos partenaires sont des musiciens américains très demandés. Depuis l'album Deep Down en 1986, Pieranunzi, le contrebassiste Marc Johnson et le batteur Joey Baron formaient un groupe aussi uni qu'aventureux, documenté par une bonne demi-douzaine de CD, dont le dernier est paru en 2009. Mais, malgré la relation très forte qui existait entre eux, cette histoire avait touché à son terme. Il fallait monter un nouveau trio.
Pour cet exercice de haute voltige, Pieranunzi a fait appel à Scott Colley, contrebassiste côtoyé pendant une semaine, en 2004, auprès de l'employeur régulier de celui-là, le guitariste Jim Hall. Quant au batteur mexicain Antonio Sanchez, connu comme partenaire du guitariste Pat Metheny, le pianiste romain l'avait déjà sollicité pour son Latin Jazz Quintet, enregistré en public et paru en 2010 (CamJazz)… Avec ce nouveau trio, Pieranunzi a changé de direction. "Aux yeux de beaucoup de gens, le trio avec Marc et Joey était une sorte d'extension de celui de Bill Evans. C'est vrai que, dans mes compositions pour ce trio-là, j'avais tendance à privilégier une atmosphère douce, lyrique, proche de l'interaction qui existait dans le trio d'Evans. Comme Antonio et Scott ont des tempéraments différents, je suis revenu à une approche plus rythmique", confie Pieranunzi.
…A l'image du premier morceau de Permutation, Strangest Consequences un thème sur lequel Pieranunzi exprime une part de lui-même "plus libre d'aller partout", le répertoire est inédit et entièrement dû au pianiste. Aujourd'hui, Enrico Pieranunzi est en pleine maturité: technique irréprochable, culture musicale des plus étendues, sens rythmique jamais pris en défaut, imagination débordant de liberté... La prise de son est magnifique (l'enregistrement a été effectué aux réputés Bauer Studios de Ludwigsburg (dans le Bade-Wurtemberg), qui ont souvent accueilli Keith Jarrett), l'équilibre entre les trois instruments est subtil et majestueux, les compositions varient en émotion, en dynamique, en liberté, avec des contrastes prononcés comme entre la ballade Within the House of the Night et l'agressif The Point at Issue, qui lui succède.

Le voyage en Italie de Scott Colley

Un grand contrebassiste américain sous influence italienne. Scott Colley, complice attitré de jazzmen parmi les plus prestigieux aujourd’hui, est présent sur deux albums publiés coup sur coup par le label transalpin CamJazz. Sur le premier (Permutation), il interprète les compositions, toujours subtiles et élégantes, du pianiste romain Enrico Pieranunzi, prenant ainsi avec brio la succession de Marc Johnson, jusque-là bassiste du maestro.

PERMUTATION Enrico Pieranunzi

Le pianiste romain Enrico Pieranunzi est grand! Héritier de Bill Evans, apprécié de Chet Baker et de Charlie Haden avec lesquels il a travaillé, il s’inscrit dans la filiation du jazz classique sans pour autant être un interprète “apaisé”. Ses compositions, imprégnées de culture classique, sont très originales (“Permutation”, “Horizontes Finales”), sa technique est virtuose et son swing imparable. Chez ce pianiste de chambre, chaque note révèle une part de l’intime. Après avoir marqué l’histoire avec Marc Johnson et Joey Baron, il s’entoure cette fois de Scott colley (contrebasse) et d’Antonio Sanchez (batterie). Ce trio “superlatif” jette un pont entre le jazz d’hier et celui d’aujourd’hui. En concert le 2 mars dans le cadre de “Jazz à Roland-Garros”.

Permutation

En interprétant l’an dernier Bach, Haendel et Scarlatti, Enrico Pieranunzi a trouvé le sien, séduit par la rigueur de ses interprétations, la richesse de ses improvisations. C’est toutefois à l’amateur de jazz que s’adresse "Permutation" (CHOC) enregistré avec un nouveau trio explosif. Après de nombreux albums avec Marc Johnson et Joey Baron, le pianiste romain s’entoure pour de nouveaux frissons de la paire rythmique Scott Colley-Antonio Sanchez, et parvient brillamment à renouveler sa musique. Construites sur des ostinato ou porteurs de thèmes admirables - Distance From Departure et Within The House Of Night -, ses nouvelles compositions favorisent la dynamique d’un trio qui, pratiquant intensément le jeu collectif, parvient à créer une tension dont profite la musique. Très mobile, constamment à l’écoute, Colley fait chanter sa contrebasse. Sanchez assure une polyrythmie intensive sur ses tambours et offre une grande variété de rythmes aux compositions d’Enrico. Ce dernier ne garde pas les mains dans ses poches, mais à vive allure fait jaillir de grandes gerbes de notes essentielles. Les Parisiens ne manqueront pas le groupe à Roland Garros le 2 mars prochain. Maître de l’harmonie, coloriste hors pair, Pieranunzi s’est trouvé des compagnons de route à la hauteur de son mirifique piano.
